Technical Overview
Business / Revenue Model Lanxoma is a product developed by Unity Solutions , a privately owned, self-funded, debt-free company. Their projected sales for 2008 are over $6 million. They generate their revenue primarily through third party resellers who market, sell, install and support their products. With Lanxoma, moreover, the option for third parties to create “white label” versions of the software is also available. Lanxoma targets multiple tiers of business – from businesses of 25 users to Fortune 500 companies and government agencies with thousands.
Technology Lanxoma was developed by the in-house software research and development team of Unity Solutions as a response to auditors’ requirements for one of their clients, a global pharmaceutical manufacturing company. It is a Windows-based platform called a “Restricted Access Permission System.” It works to eliminate the “insider threat” from IT workers who have access to sensitive company information. Essentially, users are required to obtain direct authorization before being allowed to perform admin-level actions. Once permission is granted, all activities – including keystrokes, audio, mouse movements, and screen displays – are monitored and recorded.
Products Lanxoma is a software-based solution for enterprises of all sizes. By providing IT technicians with controlled access to privileged systems and then recording subsequent actions, it serves as both a deterrent and a safeguard measure for IT workers who can view the recordings to see what they are doing right or wrong. Standard product versions can be used for up to 50, 200, 500, or over 2000 PC workstations. The smallest version will be available online to purchase and download. Customizable implementation and ongoing support and maintenance are also part of the package.
Management Team Manoj Patel, Founder and CEO: Mr. Patel was a co-founder of Unity Solutions, a JD Edwards Inc. reseller begun in 1999. In 2001, Manoj bought out his partners and developed the company further – leading it to become highly profitable and successful in reaching a global audience.
Kamlesh Shah, Technical Director: Mr. Shah oversees strategy, design and delivery of all software solutions. He is an experienced software developer and brings extensive knowledge of device and driver level technology. Previously, Mr. Shah developed device driver level code and software for a Windows NT file system filter driver and software to implement face recognition, edge and contour detection, and objects/shape detection algorithms. He earned an MS in Computer Engineering from Michigan State University where he focused on video coding and image processing for pattern recognition for machine vision.
Competition Lanxoma is the first “Restricted Access Permission System” (RAPS) and so there is limited competition at this time. Among the other new enterprise security-related products, most focus on blocking malware and preventing data leaks and insider threats. Competing products include: CoreTrace’s Bouncer software, Fortressware, Paragent’s Paragent MSP, and Enterprise Informatics eB for SharePoint.
Market The security software market is approximated at $10 billion per year. Following the beta-testing during which it was installed on over 2,000 PCs in four countries, Lanxoma has opened its sales and support services to Europe and North America. It is also preparing to release the product in several more countries in early 2009. The industries which could benefit from Lanxoma’s services span a huge range – from engineering and defense to telecommunications and retail. It is a particularly useful tool for companies that have strict internal security regulations.
Implications As the first product addressing data security measures from the within the company, Unity Solution’s Lanxoma is developing some of the most innovative and effective methods to safeguard against potentially debilitating “insider threats.” In addition, while it is primarily designed as a surveillance tool, Lanxoma could also be used to train IT workers and the product includes features for screen broadcast, screen sharing, and full-text search support. All in all, Lanxoma has a lot of potential for a variety of industries. As internal security becomes an increasingly prominent issue, the market for software like Lanxoma will only grow.
